All Quiet on the Western Front
June 25, 2007
For those of you who have not read the novel or seen the film All Quiet On The Western Front, it is an anti war masterpiece whose plot revolves around the 19 year old German soldier, Paul Baumer, and his coming of age during the Great War, World War I. It describes in vivid horror the conditions, relations, actions and destructions of trench warfare between peoples and nations. It indiscriminately takes its reader on a cataclysmic journey through 4 years of war.
The author, Erich Remarques great finesse and fluidic language of emotion filled words easily manages to put one through the war even if only in thought.
This is one of my favorite book’s and I would recommend taking a peak at it. Your local library probably has a copy.
yep, also one of my favourites.
I love this book for it’s unbiased view of war. It is written by the German perspective, which is always interesting since we hear so much from the allied side!
Great recommendation!

I would also recommend the movie, although it doesn’t quite capture the mood of the book.
For those with a general interest in war-movies from the “other” point of view (and, really, all with an interest in WWII movies) I would highly recommend the german move Stalingrad.
But for the love of all that is holy, make sure you get a copy with the original german audio and not the dubbed version, which has *horrendous* voice-acting.
Between the two All Quiet movies, I definitely preferred the first one. The remake was not nearly as powerful.
I wasn’t even aware there was another movie-version. On closer checking, it turns out the one I’ve seen is the remake.
Anyone know of a good place to get movies from the ’30s?
Order online I would say. Stores in Los Angeles carry it, but it took me years to find it. A few years ago I used to rent it from my local library. Hope that helps.
Given that LA has only slightly fewer people living in it than my entire country does, I suppose ordering online is my only reasonable choice.
Check your local library first for sure though.
Just got a copy and started reading. Thanks for the recomendation. Very easy and familiar writing style. Looks to be a fun read.
I started reading too and im hooked, its a good read ¬ recommend it !!!
